As mentioned on the Radio 1 Chris Moyles Show!
Thanks Chris!

I was sitting at my PC in the early hours of Monday morning (1am) when all of a sudden the house started to shake and the windows rattled like mad! I looked at the window in horror; half expecting something or someone to come smashing through. Talk about scared! my heart almost jumped out of it's socket. I thought that we had had intruders and went downstairs to investigate (not good for the heart).

Did the earth move for you darling?

The house shook for around 10-15 seconds. When the shaking subsided I started to think of what could have caused it?

  • explosion outside?
I went out side and looked up and down the street and over next door. I couldn't see any fire so I assumed that an explosion was not the cause.

  • lorry through the living room wall?
This happens quite a lot round this part of the world and I half expected to find a car or lorry parked on the sofa when I got down stairs.

  • collapsed mine?
Dudley (where I live) is riddled with underground mines so my next thought was that one had opened up quite close and swallowed up the drive or something.

  • bomb?
With all that's going on around the world this one was a strong consideration as we live within 10 miles of Birmingham city centre.

I text my brother and asked him to phone me which he did immediately:

  • "Hello! did you feel the house shake?"

  • "F***in hell YES! I wondered what the hell was going on"

  • "I nearly s**t my pants"

  • "I thought it was an explosion"

  • "Could have been a nuke"

  • "Yeah! we will have to see if we melt"

  • "Was dad up?"

  • "Yes" he felt the house shake"

  • F***in hell!

  • "I'm going watch the telly now to see if it comes on the news"

After my conversation with my brother I switched the TV on and tuned in to Sky News. Within 10 minutes it was reported that a minor quake was being reported from Birmingham and as far as Staffordshire.

The quake measured 4.8 on the Richter scale according to the BBC news online report at 5.00am.

"The tremor began at approximately 1254 BST and its epicentre was around Wolverhampton and Dudley in the West Midlands"

I can now say that I have experienced and survived an earth quake!
All be it a little one.

My brother in-law thought it was a Dinosaur walking up the street! I must admit that that one didn't cross my mind at all.

My wife and kids slept through it!. Doesn't surprise me one bit!

My cousin thought that the flats had fell down in Netherton.

Frightened aunty Vicky jumped out of bed and thought someone had smashed the wall. Uncle Brian just said what that and went back to sleep.

Your Comments:

Hey, heard your mention on the Chris Moyles show, that's great. like the site!! by the way I slept through the f**ker and then by coincidence I also sleep through my alarm somehow, maybe that b*stard quake broke it. [Kragg ]

I felt it too, I live next to London bridge, man did I shit myself. Happens to be that I was taking a dump at the time, unloading the Indian I had for lunch. I couldn't come to terms with it until this morning when I saw the news, I honestly thought I had caused the house to move from side to side. [Carlos]

I thought it was an unusually good night in bed, so did the wife! [Simon ]

Anyone got any idea where I can buy a scale to measure Richter's?
I've tried Argos and Index but they only have bathroom ones!
I want to measure the next f**ker myself.  [Mark]

I was standing up in my bedroom when it happened I was shaking like a leaf, it frightened the f**k out of me!  [Linsey]
Ha ha - love your web page!  [Helen]

Never noticed a thing. I was asleep by then. Don't know if anyone else in the East Mids did. [Graham]
